Limpag: Wanted: College basketball fans in college

I WENT to Game 1 of the Cesafi basketball finals between the University of the Visayas and the University of San Carlos expecting to have some difficulties going into the Cebu Coliseum.

The last time USC met UV in the finals a few years ago, there was a sizeable crowd and getting into the media row at the Cebu Coliseum was difficult. It wasn’t the case last Sunday in Game 1 as the Coliseum wasn’t packed. (READ MORE)

    USC shoots for title

THE door is open and all the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors have to do is to go all-out and claim a long overdue Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball title. However, the University of the Visayas Green Lancers will try to do their best to stop USC from closing the best-of-5 championship series today at 4 p.m. at the Cebu Coliseum.

In the early days of the Cesafi’s predecessor – the defunct Cebu Amateur Athletic Association (CAAA), USC, earlier known as the Green and Gold Warriors, reigned supreme for two seasons in 1956 and 1958 under the tutelage of the late Juan “Dodong” Aquino. (READ MORE)

    Warriors’ edge

THE University of San Carlos Warriors moved a win away from clinching their first-ever Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) college basketball title after beating the University of the Visayas Green Lancers, 87-76, in Game 3 to lead the best-of-5 championship series 2-1 at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

UV failed to find any answer to Shooster Olago, especially in the final six minutes of the game when Steve Cedrick Akomo fouled out. (READ MORE)

UV expects major adjustment from USC

WITH the series back to square one, the finals protagonists will go all out in Game 3 of the best-of-5 championship series for the 2015 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) college basketball Finals at 6 p.m. at the Cebu Coliseum.

The University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, the runner-up of last year, won Game 1, 76-70 last Sunday, while the 10-time champion University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers retaliated with a 70-63 win last Tuesday. (READ MORE)

  • Lancers own game

THE University of the Visayas Green Lancers worked harder to dictate the tempo of the game from start to finish to even the best-of-5 championship series with a 70-63 win over the University of San Carlos Warriors in Game 2 of the 2015 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Collegiate Basketball Finals at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

The variety of defense that coach Gary Cortes brought into the game helped them minimize the production of Shooster Olago in the first three quarters before the Cameroonian center broke loose and scored 11 points for the Warriors in the fourth quarter, just as UV was enjoying a 22-point lead early at the start of the payoff period. THE University of the Visayas Green Lancers will shoot for the equalizer in Game 2 of the best-of-5 2015 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) collegiate finals at the Cebu Coliseum at 6 p.m. today.

On the other hand, the University of San Carlos Warriors will try to move closer to winning their first college title in 59 years after taking Game 1, 76-70. USC last won a crown in 1956, in the early years of the Cebu Amateur Athletic Association (CAAA), the predecessor of the Cesafi. (READ MORE)

  • Warriors, Lancers start finals clash for college title

BEFORE the season had started, basketball pundits already handpicked them to march to the finals.

If Tiukinhoy has his way, schedule switch stays

IF his ways are to be followed, Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy Jr. wants his ordered schedule last Thursday to be played today, the final day of the crucial semifinal round of the 2015 Season basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

In the original schedule, the University of San Carlos and the University of San Jose-Recoletos were supposed to play in the main game at 5 p.m., while the semis match between the University of the Visayas Green Lancers and Southwestern University was set at 3:45 p.m. (READ MORE)

    Agony prolonged

WHEN all hope seemed to have dissipated, fate suddenly gave them a break.

Defending champion Southwestern University Cobras had been resigned to accepting that they have lost the chance to defend their title in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) collegiate basketball tournament after losing to the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars in their semifinal match the other day. (READ MORE)

    Cobras’ suffering ends

THE defending champion Southwestern University (SWU)started the 2015 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) season already in trouble—six of their players were disqualified and they had to field in a rather lean squad embarking on a title-defense.

But the Cobras held on, worked hard and crawled to the semifinal round after ending the elimination round at third place with a 7-5 win-loss record. (READ MORE)
