Limpag: Cesafi shoots its foot for humanitarian reasons?

A DAY before the new season could start, Cesafi got itself in a controversy with the entry of SWU’s Bendly Valdor as a replacement for Justin Aboude, who was discovered to have a heart ailment.

His entry came after the deadline, and that’s where the latest problem lie. Rival coaches contend Valdor shouldn’t be allowed to play as he didn’t go through the screening process and the replacement happened after the deadline. (READ MORE)

Pages: Gullas family savors UV’s victory

UV is the University of Vengeance.

After leading last year’s Cesafi Finals 2-1, they lost Game 4. Then, in heartbreaking fashion, they squandered an 18-point fourth quarter lead and lost to SWU. That’s last season. This year, they lost five consecutive times — a demoralizing seven-game losing streak to Southwestern. (READ MORE)

Limpag: UV shows it’s not over till fat lady sings

A DAY before Game 3 of the college basketball finals, I told Superbalita sports reporter Erwin Lirazan that it seems former champion University of the Visayas was out of it, what with the odds stacked against them. Not only did UV lose to the Southwestern University five straight times this season, the Lancers also lost two key players going to Game 3.

Surely they couldn’t beat those odds? (READ MORE)

Pages: SWU vs. UV: Best ending for Cebu fans

HISTORY repeats itself, the cliche goes. After four games in the Cesafi Finals, it’s two-all. Last year, the ending reached Game 5. That was Oct. 9. Today — 10-3-2013 — it’s happening once more: UV-SWU in one game that will end Season 13.

The funny thing is, Cebu is the same as Manila. While Cesafi is contesting the final, the UAAP best-of-three is being played at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. And, if you examine the four squads involved, they’ve got something in common: La Salle and UV are color green; UST and SWU are color gold. With the UAAP, it’s their 76th season (ours is the 13th — but prior to that we had the CAAA). Another difference: our Finals is best-of-five while theirs, surprisingly, is a short 2-out-of-3. Which teams will win the gold? Tan-awon nato. Abangan. (READ MORE)

Pages: Can the Lancers repel the Cobras’ bite?

I CALLED him up at 12:15 yesterday. I thought he’d be having lunch. Instead, my eardrums were greeted with a symphony of sounds: balls dribbling, rubber shoes squeaking against the wooden floor, the referees’ whistles reverberating.

    They were practicing. (READ MORE)

Limpag: Of lawsuits, the CAAA and Cesafi

WILL the lawsuit filed by Scott Aying lead to a deluge of court cases against the Cesafi in the future? For similar cases, god I hope so.

For issues like this, in Cesafi or even in Manila’s UAAP, I hope they all file cases until both leagues will be forced to drop the two-year residency rule. In the case of Manila, that residency rule even covers incoming freshmen and thankfully, the Cesafi hasn’t gone that route. (READ MORE)

    A game of pawns

SO THE case between Britt Reroma of USC and Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy ended with the former San Beda College Red Cubs coach issuing an apology to the commissioner.

The problem started with Scott Aying and Cesafi’s two-year residency rule, which for me, is one rule that should be scrapped. Read More

Thumbs up for Cesafi’s fight against drugs

THE Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) will conduct mandatory drug tests for college basketball players, officials and coaches this season and I think this is a move in the right direction.

The drug tests are not meant to weed out those who use performance enhancing drugs but simply those who use drugs, period. Read More

So, who do you think will win the Cesafi title?

LAST year, just like in previous years, I failed to watch live any of the exciting matches between Southwestern University and the University of the Visayas in the Cesafi finals, one that attracted a jam-packed crowd at the Cebu Coliseum.

But thanks to the livestreaming done by Sunnex, I managed to catch some of the action, including that deciding game when the Cobras mounted a furious comeback to erase an 18-point lead in the fourth quarter to win the title. Read More
