    UV dethrones SWU

CEBU (Updated 11:15 p.m.) – The University of the Visayas (UV) dethroned Southwestern University (SWU) on Thursday and grabbed its 10th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi) College Division men’s basketball crown after taking the deciding Game 5 of the best of five finals series,64-62.

SWU was poised to win the title as it held a 2-0 advantage entering Game 3 last Sunday but out of nowhere, UV struck back, winning Game 3 in double-overtime and Game 4 last Tuesday to forge the deciding match. (READ MORE)

Limpag: UV shows it’s not over till fat lady sings

A DAY before Game 3 of the college basketball finals, I told Superbalita sports reporter Erwin Lirazan that it seems former champion University of the Visayas was out of it, what with the odds stacked against them. Not only did UV lose to the Southwestern University five straight times this season, the Lancers also lost two key players going to Game 3.

Surely they couldn’t beat those odds? (READ MORE)

Pages: SWU vs. UV: Best ending for Cebu fans

HISTORY repeats itself, the cliche goes. After four games in the Cesafi Finals, it’s two-all. Last year, the ending reached Game 5. That was Oct. 9. Today — 10-3-2013 — it’s happening once more: UV-SWU in one game that will end Season 13.

The funny thing is, Cebu is the same as Manila. While Cesafi is contesting the final, the UAAP best-of-three is being played at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. And, if you examine the four squads involved, they’ve got something in common: La Salle and UV are color green; UST and SWU are color gold. With the UAAP, it’s their 76th season (ours is the 13th — but prior to that we had the CAAA). Another difference: our Finals is best-of-five while theirs, surprisingly, is a short 2-out-of-3. Which teams will win the gold? Tan-awon nato. Abangan. (READ MORE)

    Lancers force Game 5

PLAYING like there was no tomorrow, the nine-time champions University of the Visayas Green Lancers sent the series to the deciding Game 5 following a 71-66 win in Game 4 that evened the 2013 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) College Division’s best-of-5 championship series to 2-2 at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

The Lancers played like a well-oiled war machine, hitting the Cobras hard then holding steady in the final minutes when the defending champions were hot on their tail, to force the rubber-match at 4 p.m. on Thursday. (READ MORE)

    ‘Let players choose’

THE Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) has recently been riddled with one of its biggest controversies to date—getting court dates for its rules on residency.

In the 80s, when PBA legend Jojo Lastimosa came to Cebu to try his fate in college ball under Cebu Sports Hall of Famer coach Manuel Baring Sr. in the University of San Jose Recoletos, he also came under fire. (READ MORE)

    SWU nears sweep

THE defending champions Southwestern University Cobras again proved their dominance over the University of the Visayas Green Lancers with another masterful 71-60 victory in Game 2 last night at the Cebu Coliseum to move a win away from clinching the 2013 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) college basketball title.

The Cobras now lead in the best of five championship series, 2-0, after their fifth win over the Lancers this season. It was also their eighth straight win over UV, counting their Game 4 and 5 wins in last year’s finals and the Southern Island Championships of the PCCL last year. (READ MORE)

    Cesafi execs told: Improve officiating

AFTER staying silent for weeks, the University of San Carlos (USC) Green and Gold Warriors Alumni Association, the chief backer of the school’s varsity team, finally spoke up to express their concerns regarding the sanction imposed on USC assistant coach Junthy Valenzuela.

In a letter signed by Bogo City Mayor Celestino “Junie” Martinez Jr., the chairman of the alumni board of directors, and president Nilo Velasquez that was sent to Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc.
