    Leap of faith pays off

THE University of the Visayas Green Lancers head coach Felix “Donbel” Belano Jr. revealed his side of the story following an awe-inspiring Cinderella finish for his first Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) collegiate basketball title.

Belano believed the motivation and inspirational speeches from UV president Eduardo Gullas and his son Gerald Anthony “Didi” when the team’s spirits were already very low, that woke up the players. They were down 2-0 in the best-of-five finals series but recovered to win the title, Belano’s first as coach. (READ MORE)

Limpag: UV shows it’s not over till fat lady sings

A DAY before Game 3 of the college basketball finals, I told Superbalita sports reporter Erwin Lirazan that it seems former champion University of the Visayas was out of it, what with the odds stacked against them. Not only did UV lose to the Southwestern University five straight times this season, the Lancers also lost two key players going to Game 3.

Pages: SWU vs. UV: Best ending for Cebu fans

HISTORY repeats itself, the cliche goes. After four games in the Cesafi Finals, it’s two-all. Last year, the ending reached Game 5. That was Oct. 9. Today — 10-3-2013 — it’s happening once more: UV-SWU in one game that will end Season 13.

The funny thing is, Cebu is the same as Manila. While Cesafi is contesting the final, the UAAP best-of-three is being played at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. And, if you examine the four squads involved, they’ve got something in common: La Salle and UV are color green; UST and SWU are color gold. With the UAAP, it’s their 76th season (ours is the 13th — but prior to that we had the CAAA). Another difference: our Finals is best-of-five while theirs, surprisingly, is a short 2-out-of-3. Which teams will win the gold? Tan-awon nato. Abangan. (READ MORE)

UV bows to SWU in Cesafi semifinals

FRUSTRATION was written all over the faces of the University of the Visayas Green Lancers as bad calls cost them the game, and they yielded their third straight loss to bitter rivals Southwestern University Cobras, 77-70, in the semifinal round of the 2013 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) College Basketball tournament held at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

Bad calls came when UV were hot on the tails of the defending champions. The most crucial one was in the final 17.1 seconds when coach Felix “Donbel” Belano Jr. blew his top and shouted at the referee. Read More
