    VETERAN forward Miguel Tabaloc did not disappoint the hundreds of supporters who trooped to the Recoletos Coliseum of the University of San Jose-Recoletos Basak Campus as he brought the Jaguars back to life then scored the winning baskets to help the team beat the gutsy Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildcats for an 81-76 come-from-behind victory in the quarterfinal round of the 2013 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball tournament last night.

    CEBU CITY — It was a come from behind win by the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars to secure a spot in the semifinals after defeating the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats, 81-76, Thursday night in USJ-R’s home court.

    UV, USC set for semis

    THE University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers and University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors eliminated their opponents to grab a ticket to the semifinal round following their wins at the start of the quarterfinal round of the 2013 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Basketball Tournament at the Recoletos Coliseum at the USJ-R Basak Campus last night.

    The No. 2 seed Baby Lancers escaped with a 78-75 win over the University of Cebu Webmasters, while the No. 3 finishers Baby Warriors were all over the floor to hand the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CITU) Wildkittens a masterful 83-69 victory.

    UV and USC joined defending champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AC) Magis Eagles in the semifinal round. SHS-AdC got the automatic semifinal slot after finishing on top after the elimination round. (Read more)

    Warriors rout Jaguars

    THE University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors grabbed the third spot in the classification round of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Incorporated (Cesafi) after routing the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars in their match, 80-26, Tuesday evening at the Cebu Coliseum.

    The Warriors unleashed their superb shooting and ran their plays in the opening quarter tallying 17 points against 4 from the Jaguars.

    Cameroonian imports Ahmed Salihou and Barry Amin of USC proved to be too much to handle for the Jaguars in the defense department.

    Caezar Ian Ortega and rookie Victor Rabat were also unstoppable from beyond the arc with Rabat nailing five treys throughout the game.

    DEFENDING champions Southwestern University Cobras (SWU) completed a six-game sweep to take the first semifinal slot after an emphatic 88-65 win over the University of Southern Philippine Foundation Panthers (USPF) in the 2013 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum yesterday.

    However, it was the unexpected victory of the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildcats over the University of Cebu Webmasters that took the limelight away from the defending champions.

    Cesafi cracks whip

    UNIVERSITY of San Carlos small forward Dominic Adlawan and center Charles Pepito and University of Cebu Webmasters forward Windell Santander are the first players to taste the stiff penalties imposed by the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) to curb brawls.

    Last Saturday, Adlawan, Pepito and Santander were sent off from the game, which the Warriors won, 67-64, after they traded blows following a scuffle for the loose ball.

    The two-against-one brawl happened near where Commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy Jr. and his deputies, lawyer Marvin Panares, Danny Duran and Dioscoro Himotas, sat.

    Parker to the rescue

    CHRISTIAN Parker came in late, but University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars coach Edito Salacot did not hesistate and immediately sent the veteran slasher as soon as he changed into his uniform.

    Parker, who had to attend an important school activity, quickly made an impact in his little time spent inside the court and scored four crucial points to help the Jaguars survive the rally of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers for a 68-58 win in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. college game at the University of San Carlos.

    “I didn’t have any reservations. His absence (in early part of the game) was valid because he had a school-related activity. When USPF had a rally, I really needed a slasher and a tough defender. And that’s what Christian Parker can provide. So when he suited up, I quickly sent him to play,” Salacot told Sun.Star Cebu.
